Making a Tree-pit Snow Shelter

You can make a tree-pit shelter if you are forced to survive in a deeply snow-covered. This works best if your surrounding provide you evergreen trees. You will need a digging tool to make this type of shelter.

To Make the Tree-pit Snow Shelter:

  1. Find a tree with large, bushed-out branches that will give you sufficient overhead cover.
  2. Use your digging tool to dig out the snow around the trunk of the tree untill you reach your desired diameter and depth (or untill you reach the ground).
  3. Pack snow around the top and inside of your pit to provide addition protection from the wind as well as additional support.
  4. Cut additional evergreen limbs (preferably from a different tree) and place them over the top of your pit in order to provide addition cover overhead.
  5. Find whatever insulating material you can and place it in the bottom of your pit shelter to insulate you from the cold ground
